Kerbstone 15 at Knowth, stated by Martin Brennan to be a sundial, but have archaeological excavators rigorously tested this and other archaeo-astronomical hypotheses? Thomas says it contains astronomical calculations. Next Post Previous Post.
Although Knowth is not the most famous of the passage tombs in the Boyne valley personally I think it is the real gem of the Bru na Boinne complex. There are a total of 127 kerbstones surrounding the great mound at Knowth, most of which are decorated in some way, and supporting the suspected lunar alignment of the passages these kerbstones are thought to bear lunar symbols or lunar calculations.
The site was much disturbed during the Bronze Age when burials were inserted into the mound, and later during the Christian era when souterrains were built through the site.

Site 2 and Site 4 look as if they may be aligned to summer moon rises and extreme summer rises, and Site 2 has a specific solar/lunar engraving in the right-hand recess. Here again O'Kelly took the precaution ofdouble-checking, and asked a surveyor, John Patrick, toinvestigate the phenomenon. The satellites more than likely aligned to different phases of the moon, and used over a lengthly period of time before the main mound was built.
It is ironic also that testing Brennan's'pseudo-scientific' theories involves no alteration or damage tomonuments, whereas 'scientific' archaeological excavation mayinvolve irreparable loss of original features, and indeed thelong excavation of Knowth appears to the writer to have beenlittle short of vandalisation.Although most archaeologists have either ignored Brennan orreferred obliquely to him via denunciation of 'pseudo-scientifictheories', there have been signs in recent years that somearchaeologists at least are prepared to adopt a less hostileattitude. Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth are all located on the northern bank of the River Boyne however Newgrange and Knowth are accessed through the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre located on the south bank of the river. (5)Younger archaeologists are, or should be showing signs ofawareness that the destructive excavation techniques they havebeen taught should be moderated through the use of new surveyingand probing technology and computer simulation. Yet while Eogan conceded that the sun or other celestialbodies may have influenced orientation of some mounds, it is notclear that the possibility of a light phenomenon similar toNewgrange has been systematically investigated in the case ofKnowth, for example.Newgrange and Knowth are two of Europe's finest megalithicmonuments, and although they have generally been described as 'passage-graves',we will be questioning this narrow description. Three of these were worked, the rest were waste pieces.Art was found on three of the interior stones, one of which is a sillstone, and two of the kerbs. Knowth Kerbstone 15. Site 13 at Knowth was invisible before it was uncovered by excavation.
Also found were some bone beads, shards of pottery which included Carrowkeel ware, and 26 pieces of flint. The entrance isbehind a striking decorated stone, and a narrow passage leads toa cross-shaped chamber. (1)As a matter of urgency, tests for directed sun and moon rayswithin the inner chambers are required at Knowth, similar tothose carried out by Professor O'Kelly at Newgrange.
1 of 124 surviving kerbstones located around the base of the cairn of the central megalithic passage tomb at Knowth, Brú na Bóinne. The mound survived to almost a meter high; 26 kerbstones were found, 19 of which were in their original positions; this is probably about half of the original total of kerbs.
