The was flooded year-round from 1982 through 1985 due to unusually high snowpack in the Steens Mountain and subsequent runoff; since then it has only been seasonally flooded.Roads and private land make up the boundaries of the two study areas. The nearest highway is U.S. Highway 95, which forms much of the eastern boundary of the Alvord Desert study area. This high pressure means very little precipitation, averaging less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) throughout the summer months. At night, the temperature falls to between 20 and 30 °F (−7 and −1 °C), but will not normally fall much further unless Arctic air masses arrive. The Alvord Desert WSA contains 221,847 acres of BLM land.
The western edge of the Alvord Desert WSA is partially bounded by the county road which runs from Oregon State Highway 78, at Folly Farm (over 40 miles to the north), to Fields and Denio.Also forming part of the boundary of the Alvord Desert study area are seven dead-end roads, totaling 15.5 miles, which enter the WSA. The WSA contains 34 parcels of private land that total 5,370 acres. Two mountain ranges separate it from the Pacific Ocean—the Coast Range, and the Cascade Mountains. The complex geology has created an 84-square-mile dry lake bed that makes a perfect spot for stargazing and other summer fun.
The plateau is the highest point within the study area, reaching an elevation of 4,974 feet. East of this escarpment, the plateau slopes gently toward the east for a distance of about 11 miles. All of the East Alvord WSA and the remainder of the Alvord Desert WSA are in the Burns District.Directly east of the Alvord Basin is a large, steep, west-facing escarpment which rises to a plateau and forms part of the basin’s boundary. Storms that are strong enough to bring moisture to the Southeastern area of Oregon are usually related to tropical storms feeding from the Hawaiian Islands. The basin, including the dunes, covers the western quarter of the WSA and, at 4,000 feet elevation, is the lowest point within the study area. It is one of the largest playa lakes in Oregon created when rainwater fills shallow depressions in the landscape leaving behind salt minerals as it evaporates.
In some locations temperatures will only drop to between 65 and 70 °F (18 and 21 °C).

There are no dead-end roads penetrating the perimeter of the East Alvord WSA.Also within the basin on the east side of the is a substantial area of sand dunes containing both shifting and stabilized dunes. With some areas only receiving 5 inches of annual precipitation, it is also one of the driest locations in Oregon. In July the temperature commonly climbs to between 90 and 100 °F (32 and 38 °C). The Alvord Desert is located in Harney County in southeastern Oregon. August remains hot with highs ranging between 90 and 100 °F (32 and 38 °C) and lows between 50 and 60 °F (10 and 16 °C), though dropping towards the end of the month.Close-up of the surface, June 2018Fall is moderate with high temperatures ranging between 60 and 80 °F (16 and 27 °C) and lows between 40 and 50 °F (4 and 10 °C). The area is roughly shaped, being widest in the north, narrowing in the center, and widening slightly again in the south. While Steens Mountain looms to the wst, the shimmering alkali lats f the Alvord Dsert unfold to the east. The northern boundary of the Alvord Desert WSA is formed entirely by BLM dirt roads, including the section of road which it shares with the East Alvord WSA. Late day heat begins to set in by late June where highs reach between 85 and 90 °F (29 and 32 °C). Snow does sometimes occur in the rare instances when cold air from the arctic to the north meets a strong flow of moisture from the Pacific to the West.Steens Mountain to the northwest from the Alvord Desert
While many areas in the Oregon High Desert frequently dip below 0 °F (−18 °C) through the winter months, the Alvord Desert rarely sees these frigid temperatures. On average, highs will commonly reach between 40 and 50 °F (4 and 10 °C), with a few rare instances where the temperature fails to break 32 °F (0 °C). In addition, there are 70 parcels of estate lands totaling 29,213 acres. It is somewhat smaller than the Alvord and, like the Alvord, is usually dry.
