I spent a decade volunteering with young people before gaining my teaching qualifications, and I think this break from formal education allowed me to return to it with a better understanding of how it fits into the wider world. My favourite component of teaching is seeing the creativity and passion of students. That turned from ‘until I’ve finished my degree’, to ‘until after my first year of teaching’, to ‘until I get my HALT accreditation’. Most of all, their passion for the subject inspired us all.The biggest challenge for me is relinquishing control of a class, which can be difficult given the years and effort that it can take to shape a group of students into a unit who work well together. Being able to guide a new teacher into developing their own set of personal classroom strategies is a real buzz, especially when you see them take ownership of the kind of classroom environment they want to build.I love being able to have an impact on young peoples’ lives.

How to use it: 1. When students learn something new and are excited by it you can see the enthusiasm in their faces. Why are there 12 months?
