tar river shad fishing

It sounds simple, but to pull it off, it takes lots of planning, hard work, and a little bit of good fortune. One of the highlights of the day is our shore lunch.  We stop and set up lunch camp along the bank of the river.  You will be served a sit down lunch consisting of Mattamuskeet crab cakes or some other local seafood or main entrée (fresh off the skillet), 2 sides, , and drinks consisting of soda, water, or local craft brews. Our Full Day trips are 8-9 hour trips beginning at 8 a.m.  These trips give us the flexibility of covering more river miles and are longer floats.  Hours may fluctuate slightly depending on fishing conditions.  We strive to put you on the water during the best bite. The Tar River is a unique asset to our area because it offers not only our anadromous species in the late winter and spring such as hickory shad, American shad, and striped bass, but also a wide variety of warmwater freshwater species such as largemouth bass, Roanoke bass, redear sunfish, redbreast sunfish, crappie (speckled perch), white perch, yellow perch, warmouth, chain pickerel, and more. Joe wanted to catch shad in all 4 of the major Eastern NC shad rivers in one day.  Those rivers are the Cape Fear (which is an American Shad fishery), the Neuse, the Tar, and the Roanoke (which are all 3 primarily hickory shad fisheries but have a few American Shad, especially in the upper reaches above where most of the hickories are caught).  It sounds simple, but to pull it off, it takes lots of planning, hard work, and a little bit of good fortune.  In 2018, we made our first attempt at it.  We left Joe’s house in Winterville very early in the morning and were putting the boat in at Lock and Dam #1 on the Cape Fear River at first light.  There were about 5 boats in the water fishing already, so we didn’t have the very best spot but we were in the zone and we all landed our fish within about an hour of fishing and were peeling rubber out of the boat ramp parking lot headed for our second stop on the Neuse River near Goldsboro. In 2018, my friend Joe Albea, the producer of Carolina Outdoor Journal, had an unusual and ambitious idea and asked me to tag along on a great adventure.  Joe likes to fish for 2 species:  shad and speckled trout.  He is a shad nut just like me. The rate is $550 for the boat for the day.  All tackle and equipment for fishing is provided as well as a shore lunch.  Just show up and hop on the boat.  This is a total rate for the boat for the day, not a per person rate. It’s the first fish of the season and a tradition that runs deep for many families. Shad Fishing The Roanoke River, Tar River and Neuse River. Some are positive some I think back to the good ole days.   Every time I go shad fishing, I run into the same group of people.  When the bite is on, they are always there.  It’s kinda funny and when I run into one of these “nuts” there’s always a little strange smile exchanged and a sort of mutual respect acknowledging the other’s presence at the best shad spot that day.  The look and smile is a way of showing respect for a fellow shad enthusiast who had the same idea.  When I see one of these guys, I usually just laugh and say something like, “Great minds think alike” and that’s all that needs to be said.  My point is that there is a great passion and appreciation shared among shad fishermen, and when Joe Albea approached me about his idea, there was no hesitation in taking on the challenge.  He also invited Nathan Summers, who is the sports editor for the Greenville newspaper, the Daily Reflector.  Nathan is an avid fisherman and fly tyer, and he wanted to come along to document the story. Fisheries Biologists Kirk Rundle and Bill Collart sampled the Tar River yesterday (April 3), launching their electrofishing boat at the Wildlife Commission boat ramp at Bell’s Bridge in Edgecombe County and sampling the Tar River from the boat ramp downstream to the mouth of Fishing Creek. On this trip, we visit the river of your choice, targeting American shad on the Tar or Hickory Shad on the Roanoke.  On the Tar, we might encounter some Hickories, too.  This is a 6 hour trip beginning at 9 a.m.Eastern North Carolina’s Rivers experience a unique spawning migration in late winter and spring each year before the stripers show up for their spring run.  From late February through early April each year, Hickory and American shad enter the Tar and Roanoke Rivers in large numbers.  Catches of 100+ fish in a day are not uncommon during the peak of the run.  Both rivers generally peak in mid to late March when water temperatures reach the ideal range for spawning. On this trip, we go American Shad Fishing on the Tar River and Hickory Shad Fishing on the Roanoke River in the same day.  We begin our morning at 8 a.m. at Battle Park in Rocky Mount and end our day at 4 p.m. in Weldon.  We grab lunch while we’re jumping between rivers.Come fishing for both of our native shad species in the same day on two different rivers………..a truly unique fishing experience!  Both fly and conventional gear are equally effective. The Tar River near the fall line in Rocky Mount’s Battle Park hosts some of the state’s best American shad fishing.  The American shad (or white shad) are larger than the hickories.  There are hickories in the Tar, too, and anglers often catch both species while fishing the Tar.  While there are some American shad in the Roanoke River, the river is much more known for its excellent hickory shad fishing.  Fishing for hickories during the peak of the spawning run can often yield dramatic catches on conventional and fly tackle.
