Along with the usual test that makes use of all available cores, we've added Cinebench's single-core results here to get a sense of how AMD's new chip fares in lightly threaded workloads.That said, the company does have plans for those lower price points. After that, again to get a sense of how AMD's new chip handles single-core performance, we ran the same benchmark using the "One CPU" setting.At these overclocked settings, we saw our Cinebench score jump from 473 (stock) to 509 (overclocked).
But sitting as it does at the bottom of AMD's now-bountiful Ryzen crop, and also above the important $99 mark, AMD's entry-level Ryzen 3 is in a tough spot. The higher-end Ryzen 3 part will generally perform better at stock than an overclocked 1200, should also be more stable, and will probably be more reliable in the long run than a lesser chip pushed to its performance limits.Second, if you're spending hundreds on a high-end video card for games and (again) you aren't planning on gaming at 4K, a chip in the range of the Core i7-7700K (which also includes the new Core i7-7740X on Intel's new Core X-Series platform) will give you significantly higher frame rates in at least some games. But this test still illustrates that, for programs that are older or haven't been written to take advantage of multiple cores, the Core i7-7700K is still king of this lot, and Intel's latest-generation chips as a whole have a clear edge over AMD.For comparison numbers, we did the same thing with our Intel Kaby Lake testbed running on an Intel Core i3-7350K.
