And maybe which option would be the most cost effective?You can, but it’s just not what they’re optimized for. We used ones from the GP100. So think of it as it is true that this is a memory to memory kind of link, but I don't just think of it as magically doubling the frame buffer. The older 10xx card did do P2P over PCIe and the new RTX Quadro's do also. I need something that performs at least as well as my current Quadro. For GPU to GPU communication it's trickier.
This caused much excitement since one of the features of NVLink on Quadros is the ability to combine the video memory on both cards and share it between them.
The Quadro GP100 (Pascal) and GV100 (Volta) are souped up cards with added features for running compute software, deep learning algorithms and other such things that are currently unsupported in TouchDesigner. If a multi-purpose laptop (50% gaming, 50% workstation) better meets your needs, I’d recommend GeForce. We were considering a Surface Book 2, which comes with a Geforce GTX 1050. For the RTX 20xx cards and Titan if the NVLINK bridge is not there then things fall back to memcpy to buffers in CPU memory space.

SLI on top of that enables cooperation between the video cards on drawing frames for display in games or other 3D applications, if they support / can benefit from it. Ours use Geforce cards, which are more versatile, than Quadro cards so they can handle the gaming and the CAD both.
