Directions: From the junction of Interstate 17 and State Route 260 in Camp Verde, travel east on SR 260 for about 8.4 miles to Forest Road 626 and turn left. We thought we were on trail multiple times but we end up at a dead end and then see the trail 5 feet above us then go onto it then be at a dead end again! This is a good family hike. The 196-mile solo canoe journey was the longest known boat trip on the river, besting the one previous thru trip in the 1980’s by four miles. A rattlesnake took off through and almost on top of the long grass less than 5 feet from where I had just walked a few seconds earlier. About a mile into the hike, we saw some camp tents on the right hand side. We have decided in 2020 not to rent our cabin out pending our plans to relocate in the future. It has been going on for 132 years! After several hundred yards from the parking lot, the trail becomes nothing more than mud holes and a vague suggestion of a trail. This site is 3 ½ miles north of Payson.

You march through a small canyon alongside a creek with plenty of trees around. as a moderate skill mountain biker I don't think it's rideable. In many places there isn't much of a trail, but you just follow the river.

It holds claim is the oldest Rodeo in the west and it goes on every year in Spring and again in August. As a result, unless you want to slosh through a lot of mud and standing water alongside the actual river bed, I would wait at least a few weeks, if not a couple months, before trying this trail.

The East Verde river cabin is located rough 4 miles south of the Rim, and 13 miles north of Payson. Near mile marker 257 just south of the East Verde River, turn right (east) on Forest Road (FR) 272. Definitely not easy hike due to footing and lack of trail maintenance but can’t complain-I’m sure that whole canyon is a rushing river after monsoons and big rains-washing away any trail anyways.

I would not consider that hike moderate but there are a lot of ankle twisting River RockI couldn’t really figure out the trail but it was pretty and the water was perfect.
