The starting point on this review is kinda random. You can make a loop out of the trip and come back though Globe /Miami area and return to the city on US 60. Doesn't require 4x4, but some clearance.
It's definitely a scenic drive and worth doing. So many recreational and camping opportunities. If you like to take pictures the drive could take you all day. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.We have driven the trail (30 miles unpaved) many times in the last four years. You can travel this in a car easily and the windy sections are quite fun.The drive is spectacular winding around the mountainside. Food is also available at Canyon Lake and Apache Lake. Make time to stop at Tortilla Flats to have a bite to eat. A good mix of pavement and dirt, perfect for any car really.great ride, explore the cave at fish creek bridgeThis was an amazing drive especially when you get off the paved road. Some bumps and washboarding, but nothing particularly precarious. The trail is primarily used for nature trips, fishing, and scenic driving and is accessible year-round. Back to Roosevelt Dam...gets you from point A to point B. cool with regards to views of the lakes and the canyons, but the road is too narrow at many places for the amount of traffic there is.nice leisure drive, only real concern are people towing boats trying to get to apache lake...they seem to like to fly around corners in the middle of the road. Haven't been for many years and it sounds like there have been many changes through the years.

The road is well maintained, moderately traveled and filled with so many variations of scenery, its awesome. This well-traveled road affords visitors an incredible view of canyons, geologic formations, desert plants and trees, desert and lake views, and wildflowers in season.At Roosevelt Dam you'll to have to decide whether you'll turn back and go the way you came, take AZ188 towards the Beeline Highway (AZ87) toward Payson or Fountain Hills, or take AZ188 to the Miami/Superior area and back to Apache Junction.Great trail with several places to stop along the way. I did the entire loop starting on 87 from Mesa to 88 at Apache Junction once and just loved it. Some good lakes to check out on the way.This is a very scenic drive. Saw a couple snakes and a Gila Monster as well. Per the ranger, they had severe damage in the area where a fire previous burnt. You need to be prepared for dirt roads that are sometimes single lane. Beautiful views of lakes and cliffs.
